Macy’s 83rd Thanksgiving Day Parade 2009

The Macy’s 83rd Thanksgiving Day Parade was a memorable event for 2009. The parade featured the usual mix of giant helium balloons, floats, marching bands, and performances by popular singers and dancers that children of all ages enjoyed. But this year also saw new energy and excitement as the parade made its way down New York City’s Central Park West.

The parade began with traditional fanfare – clowns on motorcycles, marching bands from across the country, colorful floats with characters from popular films and TV shows – but also included many innovative elements to make it even more exciting. An expanded balloon line-up featured new characters such as Spiderman, Ronald McDonald, Sailor Mickey and Pillsbury Doughboy; plus there were special performances by some of today’s hottest musical acts like Jimmy Fallon & The Roots, Cyndi Lauper, Gloria Gaynor and Andrea Bocelli. All in all, it was a sight to behold!

The 83rd Annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade was held on November 26th, 2009, in New York City and shown to viewers live on NBC that same day from 9 a.m. to 12 noon EST. It was hosted by Matt Lauer, Meredith Vieira, and Al Roker. Participating celebrities included Cyndi Lauper, Andrea Bocelli, Jay Sean, Tiffany Thornton, Jimmy Fallon and The Roots, and Gloria Gaynor.

The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade is an annual parade in New York City presented by the U.S.-based department store chain Macy’s. The Parade first took place in 1924, tying it for the second-oldest Thanksgiving parade in the United States with America’s Thanksgiving Parade in Detroit (with both parades being four years younger than Philadelphia’s Thanksgiving Day Parade). The three-hour parade is held in Manhattan, ending outside Macy’s Herald Square, takes place from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Eastern Standard Time on Thanksgiving Day, and has been televised nationally on NBC since 1953. The Parade’s workforce is made up of Macy’s employees and their friends and family, all of whom work as volunteers.
