Paro Airport Arrival | Meet Embrace Bhutan Tour Guides

After visa formalities and collection of baggage; as you exit from the arrival hall of Paro airport, you will be met by your guide and chauffeured (1-hour drive) to your hotel in Thimphu (7,700 ft | 2.35 km) – the seat of the government, religion, and commerce in Bhutan. Thimphu was a wooded farming valley until 1961 when it became Bhutan’s official national capital. With an estimated population of 150,000 people, this unique city is filled with an unusual mixture of modern development alongside ancient traditions.

Upon arrival in Thimphu, check into your hotel and settle down…rest, and start adjusting to the higher elevation.

Arrival & Not Prepared!

Due to our earlier delay in Bangkok, we arrived in Paro late in the day (around 3:30 pm). I have to admit, we were not expecting the overload of emotions like we got when we exited our plane (the old fashion way – portable stairs onto the tarmac).

Breathtaking Views Surrounding Paro International Airport

The First Step Off Of The Plane Was… Wow!

So many things hit us at once, bright blue skies, crisp clean air, and beautiful views of the Himalayas mountains surrounding the valley – it was spectacular! All of us in the group were blown away – we had to stop and take it all in (along with a few pictures).

Arrival at Paro International Airport

Beautiful Airport

After a short walk into the airport (a beautiful structure built in the old traditional Bhutanese style architecture), we were blown away by the beautiful interior decoration inside the airport – again, spectacular!

Enter Into Bhutan and Meet Our Tour Guides

Since we were the only flight arriving in the afternoon, we were able to quickly go through immigration/customs, and stamp our passports. After meeting our wonderful Embrace Bhutan tour guides, we got our bags, exchanged money (USD to Bhutanese Ngultrum), and then hit the duty-free store (where some purchased alcohol to have during our trip).

Load Up and Drive to Thimphu

Now it was time to take our bags (with help from our guides) to our large tour van (out front of the airport) and make way for our one-hour drive to Thimphu. Unfortunately, it was late in the afternoon and quickly turning dark, but we were able to experience a little bit of Bhutan’s beauty before the sunset – covered in its own post… Drive – Paro to Thimphu.

Changes to Our Itinerary

Due to arriving later than first planned (due to issues with our plane), our Bhutanese Tour Guide (Tashi) had to change a few things with our itinerary, but this was not a problem as we were still able to see everything they had planned while visiting Thimphu.
