The Shwedagon Pagoda in Yangon is considered to be the most famous and sacred Buddhist landmark in Myanmar (Burma). Also known as the “Golden Pagoda” due to it being covered with solid gold plates (and gold leaf) it is located on Singuttara Hill where it towers 325 feet becoming the center point of the city.

According to legend, it is over 2600 years old (which would make it the oldest Buddhist pagoda in the world) however most historians think it was constructed in the 6th century (during the Bagan period – another destination we visited and will be covering).

This beautiful Buddhist shrine is thought to house sacred relics from four previous Buddhas.
