House of Memories Restaurant Yangon

Since we flew out so early in the morning, we didn’t get a chance to get breakfast, so the first thing we did after leaving Yangon Airport was to request to go to a restaurant. The tour guide suggested “House of Memories” – an over 100-year-old colonial and historic Villa that included an office used by the great Aung San—Burma’s independence hero and father of opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi. This was a great choice – the food was very good.

We found the restaurant and atmosphere at House of Memories to be very good. All the dishes we chose were very good (but a bit mild compared to our usual Thai food). We especially enjoyed the Pork Curry with Black Soybean Paste and Cauliflower Salad.

House of Memories Restaurant / Aung San Office (Second Floor)

The House of Memories is a large colonial-style wooden villa that was originally the family home of Dina and Caroline Nath and was known as the “Nath Villa”. Dina was the chairman of the Indian Independence Army for Burma and was active in the anti-colonial movement in Burma.

Because of this, he allowed Aung San to have his first personal office on the second floor of the villa and for a short time (in 1941) was considered to be the Burmese Independence Army (BIA) headquarters.

Office of General Aung San

Aung San (Burmese: ဗိုလ်ချုပ် အောင်ဆန်း; MLCTS: aung hcan:, pronounced [àʊɰ̃ sʰáɰ̃]; 13 February 1915 – 19 July 1947) was a Burmese politician, independence activist and revolutionary. He was instrumental in Myanmar’s struggle for independence from British rule, but he was assassinated just six months before his goal was realized. Aung San is considered the founder of modern-day Myanmar and the Tatmadaw (the country’s armed forces), and is commonly referred to by the titles “Father of the Nation”, “Father of Independence”, and “Father of the Tatmadaw”.

The Burma Independence Army (BIA)[a] was a collaborationist and revolutionary army that fought for the end of British rule in Burma by assisting the Japanese in their conquest of the country in 1942 during World War II. It was the first post-colonial army in Burmese history. The BIA was formed from group known as the Thirty Comrades under the auspices of the Imperial Japanese Army after training the Burmese nationalists in 1941. The BIA’s attempts at establishing a government during the invasion led to it being dissolved by the Japanese and the smaller Burma Defence Army (BDA) formed in its place. As Japan guided Burma towards nominal independence, the BDA was expanded into the Burma National Army (BNA) of the State of Burma, a puppet state under Ba Maw, in 1943.
