Port Stop – Walled City of Old Cartagena, Colombia
Cartagena is a port city on Colombia’s Caribbean coast. By the sea is the walled Old Town, founded in the 16th century, with squares, cobblestone streets, and colorful colonial buildings.
Founded in 1533, by Spaniard Don Pedro de Heredia, the city was the first Spanish colony on the American continent and one of the first sanctuaries of freed African slaves in the Americas. It is currently populated by an ethnic mix representative of Colombia’s own variety. The city’s history includes its role as a center for the Spanish Inquisition and as a major slave market.
