Thai Temple Wat Hame Assavaram at White Horse Temple
At the end of our visit to the White Horse Temple in Luoyang, we got a pleasant surprise. In the distance, we could see what looked like the architecture and style of a temple from Thailand.
When we mentioned it to our tour guide, he informed us that it was an actual Thai Buddhist temple, completed in 2012. Wat Hame Assavaram is the first Theravada doctrine temple to be built in China.
Wat Hame Assavaram is one of three temples that are part of the Foreign Temple Complex at White Horse Temple. India opened a temple in May 2010 and Myanmar opened in June 2014. In 2012, the municipal government of Luoyang approved an eight-year plan to build a cultural park around the temple, including an International Buddhist Garden featuring examples of Buddhist architecture from around the world.
We were even lucky enough to meet and talk with the head monk of this temple. He was glad to see us, as he doesn’t get many visitors.
