Visit Pema Choling Nunnery, where over 100 nuns, mostly teenagers and young women, study and practice.
Our next stop was the beautiful Pema Choling Nunnery. Located in Tang, Bumthang, this nunnery was established by His Eminence Gangteng Rinpoche for empowering women in Bhutan in 2001. The nunnery has an enrollment of 157 nuns.
Pema Choling is a Non-Profit Organization working to support education and generate self-sufficient girls and women in Bhutan. Pema Choling Shedra is the first Buddhist college to produce women completing masters in Buddhist philosophy and to women seeking a spiritual path. The nunnery consist of nuns coming from various society and educational background. The shedra offers a 9 year masters degree in Buddhist philosophy as well as other regular school courses.

Tour of Courtyard and Handmade Gift Shop
Without being too disruptive, we took a short tour of the nunnery’s courtyard and a small handmade gift shop (proceeds help support the nunnery). We bought a few items such as a couple of very nice prayer beads.

Visit with Two Young Nuns
Afterward, we got to meet and talk with a couple of young nuns. They also briefly showed us their living accommodations. Before leaving, our group gave a donation to the nunnery as an offering of help and support.

Even though our tour was short, we very much enjoyed our visit to Pema Choling Nunnery.
