The Mae Jo Yee Peng Lantern Release is an unforgettable experience that attracts tourists and locals to the Northern region of Thailand. It is a Thai traditional festival with over 1000 years of history that celebrates the end of Buddhist Lent. Participants gather at Mae Jo University in Chiang Mai to witness an incredible sight – the mass launching of hundreds of lanterns into the night sky.
These glowing, colorful paper lanterns are decorated with wishes and prayers written by their owners, expressing hopes for health, prosperity, peace, and other blessings as they ascend toward the stars. As each lantern is released from its owner’s hands into the air, it symbolizes sending away evil spirits and bringing good luck for the coming year. The breathtaking spectacle continues until all lanterns have been sent off into the sky, creating a mesmerizing display that will be remembered for years to come.
