Hamad International Airport Doha Qatar | May 2022

Today, we make our second visit to Hamad International Airport in Doha, Qatar. We passed through here back in November 2017 on our way to Thailand. This airport is very impressive – think of a large, modern, designer-brand mall that also happens to be an airport.

Hamad International Airport (HIA) in Doha, Qatar, is an award-winning airport that has become the new gateway to the Middle East. Since opening in 2014, HIA has established itself as one of the world’s most luxurious airports, boasting modern facilities and innovative technology. It offers travelers from around the world a unique experience with its signature design and exceptional service.

Security was very strict on our last visit, but this time around we zipped through very quickly. Once we found our departing gate, our short 2-hour and 45-minute layover went by quickly.

Hamad International Airport (IATA: DOH, ICAO: OTHH) (Arabic: مطار حمد الدولي, Maṭār Ḥamad al-Duwalī) is an international airport in the State of Qatar, and the home of Qatar’s flag carrier airline, Qatar Airways. Located east of its capital, Doha, it replaced the nearby Doha International Airport as Qatar’s principal airport. Formerly known as New Doha International Airport (NDIA), Hamad International Airport was originally scheduled to open in 2008, but after a series of costly delays, the airport finally opened on 30 April 2014 with a ceremonial Qatar Airways flight landing from nearby Doha International. Qatar Airways and all other carriers formally relocated to the new airport on 27 May 2014. The airport is named after the previous Emir of Qatar, Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani. Hamad International Airport became the first Middle Eastern airport to be awarded the Skytrax’s World Best Airport for 2021 in the 2021 World Airport Awards, ending the 7-year dominance of Singapore’s Changi Airport. Qatar’s Hamad International Airport has been named the World’s Best Airport for the second year running. The announcement took place at the Skytrax 2022 World Airport Awards, held at Passenger Terminal EXPO in Paris, France.
